REMNANT ONE

2022

Remnant One is part of the Remnants of a Future Architecture series of artefacts that speculate on the form of an architecture from the near future. This steel structure illustrates how digital design processes and 3D printing could transform the production of architecture using wire-arc additive manufacturing techniques, an emerging technology that uses industrial robots to 3D print steel.New methods of digital fabrication are increasingly allowing structural performance, ornament and architectural

expression, once separate ‘layers’ within a building, to become one integrated whole. This holistic approach to design and fabrication is made possible using generative design algorithms and robotics.

The project is a demonstrator of the capacity of the XL Metal 3D Printing (WAAM) research agenda.
